If you have been searching for tips for organizing a playroom, you will find that a lot of it comes down to how you are going to organize children’s toys. Kids’ toys present a couple of challenges. First of all, they tend to involve a lot of small pieces. Secondly, simply organizing them into different containers is often not enough. You need to come up with a system your kids will successfully continue to use. So here are some suggestions for organizing using plastic bins for toys.

1. Use color coding for different children or different types of toys.

First of all, in a lot of cases, it is worth it to buy storage totes for toys in a range of different colors. Even though you might like the neat look of just one color, kids typically enjoy different colors, and there are some practical uses for them as well.

If for example you have more than one child, you need a way to keep their toys separate. One easy way to do this is to have each child choose a bin color. That way at a glance both of them can see which bins belong to each of them, and they are less likely to use each others’ totes or take each others’ toys.

If you have just one child, a range of bin colors is still useful. Different colors can be used to denote different kinds of toys. Blue bins for example might contain dolls, red bins might contain toy soldiers, green bins might contain soft toys, and so forth. It is best to let your child come up with a method for doing this (with your help if needed) so that their associations will help them find what they need.

2. Use tip-out bins for small parts.

Bins with lids are smart in many cases, because they help to keep toys neat and contained. But with some types of toys such as Lego bricks, tip-out bins work very well.

They make it easy for children to see at a glance where everything is and to reach in and grab what they need while they are building. They also make it a breeze to put back parts afterwards when they are no longer needed. The easier it is for kids to put away their toys, the less likely they are to avoid doing it!

3. Use clear bins for younger kids.

Generally speaking, I recommend sticking with opaque bins in different colors rather than transparent bins. Why? Because they have a much neater look to them. Clear bins can increase the appearance of clutter.

That being said, very young children may benefit from the additional visual cue of being able to see directly inside the bins to find the toys they want. So with these kids, you may want to think about going with clear bins anyway.
