Need to move a bunch of your stuff into storage? Organizing a storage unit can be incredibly daunting, because you know that you are paying for every square foot of space you are renting. That means that if you cannot squeeze everything you have into that space, you may need to purchase the next size unit up—and you may not even be able to afford that. Considering a lot of these places jack up their rates every year, it is well in your interest to try and fit all your stuff into the smallest possible unit.
So what are some storage unit organization ideas to help you fit everything you can into the smallest space? It all starts with packing tips for saving space. When you are packing your boxes and your plastic bin storage units, observe the following tips:
• Use soft items as packing materials for more fragile items. For example, if you are storing clothing or bedding, use that as packing material where you can instead of bubble wrap, Styrofoam, and the like. This will allow you to make far more efficient use of space, resulting in fewer boxes to store.
• Try to use consistent box sizes. Just pick several sizes of boxes or bins – stackable plastic bins are a great choice. You do not want to be struggling to fit together bins and boxes in a myriad different sizes. They are like puzzle pieces which are not designed to fit. That can result in wasted pockets of space which are hard or impossible to fill later on, especially in the back of your storage unit.
• Think about weight distribution when you are packing. This has less to do with saving space and more to do with saving your back, but that is important too. Try and pack each box with a combination of light and heavy items so that you can pick up your boxes and move them with ease. This is especially critical if your storage unit is upstairs and you have to do a lot of hauling between the unit and your vehicle.
• Do make labels and guides to help you locate everything later. This is especially important if you are distributing items together which have no relation to one another in the name of saving space and distributing weight in a practical fashion. The willingness to do this is one of the greatest secrets to efficient packing.
• Get one of those fragile stamps that mail workers use, or just write “fragile” on bins and boxes which contain delicate items. That way you will know which boxes you need to handle with care when you are moving things.
Now you know some tips and tricks to help you pack more efficiently. This should keep the bins and boxes which are going into your storage unit as minimal as possible.
